Turning the dial

Mrs. Demeris is boiling water on the stove.  She turns the temperature dial up to high to boil the water.  The water is boiling vigorously with large bubbles quickly forming and bursting at the surface.  Mrs. Demeris then turns the dial of the stove down to low.  The water is boiling gently, with smaller bubbles slowly forming and bursting at the surface.  Mrs. Demeris wonders if the boiling temperature changes when she turns the dial.  What would you tell Mrs. Demeris?
A: The boiling temperature is greater when the dial is set at high.
B. The boiling temperature is greater when the dial is set at low/
C. The boiling temperature is the same at both settings.

Explain your thinking.  What "rule"or reasoning did you use to select your answer?

If someone has already left a comment please read and either agree or disagree.  Provide an explanation for your answer.  Disagreeing respectful is perfectly acceptable!

    4. Paul I think you are correct because changing the temperature cannot change the boiling point. Also all water will boil at 100 degrees Celsius the only way to change the boiling point would be to change the air pressure. Fay you are also right the temp will change when you turn the dial but the question asks will the boiling point change. So the answer is C the boiling temperature is the same at both settings.

    5. same here because no matter what the boiling point is it won't change

    6. Yaa you can never change the boiling point so i think C.

    4. That isn't true because water STARTS to boil at 100 degrees celsius but also boils at any temperature greater than that, so I agree the answer is A.

  5. I think the answer is A because when the dial is on high the bubbles we bursting fast and on low it brought the boiling down to a soft bubble

  6. Sorry, I read the problem wrong.I think the answer is actully C because when water boils, it boils at a constant temperature. It doesn't matter whether the dials is high or low, it will still stay the same.

  7. I agree with Michael G. The correct answer is C. If you put a thermometer in the pot, it will measure the same temperature regardless of where the dial is set (100 degC).

  10. I think its (A) because the if you crank up the dial the stove will heat the pot and the water will get warmer.

  20. The answer is A. When the dial turns to high, the temperture rises that makes the water boil quicker and form big bubbles. When the dial turns low, the temperture reduces that makes the water settle down and only form small bubbles. Therefore, the boiling temperture is greater when the dial is set to high! :)

    1. I disagree with you Madisyn because water boils at 100 degrees celsius or above

      Delete
  28. The answer is C, because water boils at 100 C. The actual temp will get hotter when Mrs. Demeris turns the dial up, and vise versa. As long as the temp remains above 100 C, the water will keep boiling (before it all evaporates). Although, the hotter it gets, the more vigerously the water boils. (Thus explaining the bubbles).

    1. But did you know that you can barley change the boiling point if you change the air pressure around it. Because it typically is always trying to boil but the air pressure keeps it forced down.

  33. I think that the answer is C. The answer is C because BOILING POINT does not change no matter what. It will always be 100 degrees Celsius as long a you have bubbles bursting at the top you have boiling water. If you have water that is 100 degrees celsius or higher it is boiling. If you add more heat the water will change temp. but boiling point will not change.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I don't mean to be rude, but I think that anyone who said "A" or "B" just really needs to try to really understand. Everyone who said "A" or "B" says that when you turn it up it is hotter, and when is turned down it is colder.
