Hot and Cold Balloons

Mrs. Charles filled a balloon with air.  She tightly tied the balloon so no air could get in or out of the balloon.  She kept the balloon in a warm room.  An hour later she put the balloon in a cold freezer.  When she took the balloon out 30 minutes later, it was still tied tightly shut.  No air escaped form the balloon; however the balloon had shrunk.  Mrs. Charles wondered if the mass of the balloon (including the air inside it) had also changed.

What do you think?  Is the mass the same or less than?  Give examples, try it out, research on line.  Remember Wikianswers is not a valid scientific website!

Anyone with the right answer and a GOOD explanation will get a pink free sit pass!

  3. I do not think the mass of the balloon changed. I did some reasearch and it said the balloon will get smaller and the volume will decrease but the mass would stay the same since you are not putting more air in or taking any out.

  5. I think it shrunk because in an air balloon for example gets big and floats in the air with hot air and in the cold it shrunk cause the cold air probably squeezed the some of the air out

    1. Remember, weight and mass are two different things. The particles are basically the mass and no particles let out. It just packed close together.

  8. I did some research and found out mass of an object does not change unless the object changes. So, I think, since the object (the balloon) did not change and the air inside it did not escape, the mass stayed the same. It was smaller because the air inside the balloon was colder and colder air is more dense. The particles are closer together. Thats why the ballon is smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think that the mass stays the same.

    ReplyDelete
  10. As no air escaped there was no change in mass.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The mass of the balloon stayed the same because the mass only changes when the object undergoes a chemical change. The cold from the freezer put less air pressure on the balloon and it shrunk. But even though the molecules are packed tightly together, no mass lets out of the balloon. There is still the same amount of molecules.

    ReplyDelete
  12. i think the ballon did not loose any mass because the freezer is cold the molecules do not move as fast so they do not really produce heat and heat is what makes the balloon bigger so i think i still weighs the same.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I did some research and found that it doesn't change the mass or the air
so I think that the balloon was in different temps so fast that the balloon got smaller. So I think nothing changed mass didn't change or the air didn't
    change.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think that the mass changed because it was in a warm room, and then a cold one.I think because of the temputare changing for a certian amount of time changes the mass because of the temputare . Also about the size thing I think the size changed because of density, and how dense it was in the warm room, and then less dense in the cold room.

  15. I went on www.ask.com and they said when you put a balloon in the freezer it will deflate slowly because the molecules will slow down. The balloon will not loose any air and the mass will not change.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that the air did not change because it cant the balloon is still cloused I think that the aair molucuels just shrunk and skised together kind of like when a liquid turns into a solid.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that the mass did not change beacuse the air molecules cant get out of the ballon i think why it shrunk was beacuse the warmness heated the baloon and then it whent in a cold area and i think thats why it shrunk but i dont think the air changed at all beacuse no molecules can escape the ballon unless the baloon pops plus the mass only gets out if a chemical change happens and that is almost impossible

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the mass will be the same because no air gets out. The cold air just makes the molecules move slower, so less movement means the balloon shrinks.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The air didn't come out so I think the mass will be the same.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think the mass will not change because the air did not escape however it shrunk but that did not change the mass.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think no mass has escaped they are still in there just it srunk some.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay, the ballon shrunk because when it was heated, all the particles started moving around causing the baloon to expand. When it was left in the freezer, all the particles started moving towards each other so THAT made it shrink although the mass stayed the same. A example is of thinking that you and your friends are particles of air inside the baloon, if the floor or rubber was heated up. you and your friends would start moving around asking for more space to run. When you are beeing frozen, you and your friends are cold and come together to mantain the heat, and all the space left over will shrink:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I went website called sciencenews.com and it says when heat up a balloon then freezes and it shrinks and it says it shrinks because when the balloon is heated up the molecules started to move around and when the balloon is frozen the molecules go towards each other and that's why it shrinks. When the balloon shrinks, the balloon's mass does not change.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think it shrinks because it was frozen.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the balloon lost no air but the atoms where not moving around so it got smaller like Mrs. Charles said earlier it is like girls on the playground when its cold they hudle together to get warm but when its hot they spread out and run around like hot atoms in a balloon.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the balloon's air atoms just are moving less so the balloon shrinks. So the balloon expands a little bit because the atoms in the air are moving faster from the heat. I think the balloon keeped its mass.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the mass would stay the same because the ballon just changed in size.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i think the mass is the same because if no air was sucked out of it then it
    was the same form.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think the air outside affected the air inside the balloon so cold air shrinks so the balloon shrinks

    ReplyDelete
  30. I did some research on wikipedia and it says " the law of conservation of mass, also known as the principle of mass/matter conservation, states that the mass of a isolated system [ closed to all transfers to matter and energy]
will remain constant over time." so i think that the mass of the balloon will not change. EX- a soccer ball weighs the same amount cold as hot, because you did not let any air out.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that the mass did not change at all but, the volume did. Hot air expands and cold air contracts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that the ballon lost no air the atoms inside the ballon just slowed down and moved closer together. Like the girls at the playground. I have another example: when the molecules are hot at a dance party they are moving fast like ZUMBA but when it is cold they slow down as if they were playing a slow song.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The balloon would still have the same mass because the only thing that changed was just the size and shape. It may look like it lose mass(which is gas), but it didn't. When Mrs. Charles said she tightened the balloon so no air would come out, that evidence there tells us that the mass has to be in there. There is no way that the mass in there can get out since it is shut tightly. I did some research online and it says that when the helium in the balloon is heated, the air expands. When it gets cooler, it's the opposite. Then it shrinks, BUT, it still has mass in it because of the tightened balloon that won't make the mass escape. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I did some research and I found that if you put a balloon in a freezer it will start to deflate because the molecules slow down. The Mass will not change. The balloon did not free any air . .

  37. The mass will not change because if you put a balloon in a freezer or any cold places the molecules will just slow down. Also none of the air got out of the balloon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. In the question itself it says the balloon lost no air, so I don't think it's mass changed. I did some research, and I found that when air heats up, the molocules move faster and need more room to move so they spread out. Cold air contracts like the girls on the playground. This is also why hot air rises, and cold air sinks because since all the hot molocules are spread out they are less dence than the compact, slow-moving, cold molocules. So, just because they're more spread out, or more compact, The mass does NOT change.

  39. I think that the mass wouldn't change the molecules would just slow down. I also did the experiment and then when I left it out it went back to it's original size because the mass had not change. It is like that girls on the playground example Mrs. Charles said, " They get compact when its cold and spread out when it's warm."The reason I left the balloon out is because on www.ehow.com it told you that the balloon would expand back to regular size.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i think the ballon did not lose any mass because no air was lost in the freazer of warm room i think it srunk because when it went from hot air to cold air the ballon lost its heluim inside of the ballon because when hot air and cold air attract each other a storm cold possibly happen!!!:)

  43. I do not think the balloons mass changed at all. Nothing about the ballon changed except for its size. An object's size does not change its mass.

  44. Hi Ms Charles sorry that I'v been missing class I had a stoumach bug.I dont think the mass changed.I think that the balloon shrunk because it was in the freezer and the freezer is cold.So the molicules hudled closer together like peinguins in a very cold storm to preserve heat so thats why the balloon srunk.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The mass of the balloon did not change at all because the air is still in there, but the molecule speed has slowed down because of the cold temperature.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't think the mass changed I think the molecules just slowed down so the balloon shrunk.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The Balloon shrunk because the molecules have become closer together like the girls do on the play ground when its cold outside so the molecules have gotten closer together

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think the mass did not change because it does not matter if you put the ballon in a warm room or in a cold freezer. It does not matter what the temputaure is the mass will stay the same because it could be below freezing point and the mass would stay the same.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think the mass stayed the same when it was it was hot the molecules spread out but when it was cold the molecules tightly packed together.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think the mass stayed the same because it got warmer and that is how it shrunk and let the air out

    ReplyDelete
  51. Cold air takes less space than warm air. If you cool a ballon it will shrink, if you heat it it will expand. You still have the same amount of air in it, the only thing that changes is how much space it takes up. Condence means that something turns into a liquid, but the air don't. If you see droplets inside the ballon it is because of the water you exhale when you inflate the ballon (if you inflate the ballon with a bicycle pump no water gets in and no drops form).
It is possible to calculate how much it will shrink or expand depending on the temperature. If you use celsius you can do it like this: (Temperature in fridge + 273) / (Temperature from start + 273) x 100% = percent of original size.
    example:
A ballon is inflated at room temperature (say 20 degree celsius) and then placed in a refridigerater to cool down (say 8 degree celsius). The ballon will then be (8 + 273) / (20 + 273) x 100% = 281 / 293 x 100% = 95.9%. The ballon is 4% smaller, hardly visible in other words. If the ballon is left in room temperature, it will warm back up and get its original size back.

This is what I found on the internet at www.balloonsciencequestions.com it basicly tells you that if you put a balloon in a hot room then a cold room the it WILL shrink but it will NOT lose the mass inside of it.

  53. The balloon will shrink or it will become very small. Since the speed of molecules has decreased they move very slow and come closer ...

    (answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080125103015AA7pxvy)

So When a balloon is inflated, the amount of air it holds is its volume. ... The air will shrink in the colder environment, reducing the volume and air pressure. ... When the air in the balloon heats up, it expands as the molecules move farther apart.

I think it's less than because the air pressure is reduced

    ReplyDelete
  54. The balloon grew bigger than smaller, because in hot air the molecules spread apart, in the cold air the molecules come together

  56. the balloon did not loose any air. I did the experiment and that happened to me but I knew that it was just the molecules that slowed down (it did not change its mass ether).

    ReplyDelete
  57. The mass probably didn't change because none of the air escaped and when it's cold, the molecules stop moving as fast around everywhere and went slower. When the molecules move around quickly, they bounce around everywhere. When it's cold, the molecules don't bounce around as much and they go more in the center than the outside of the ballon like when concrete cracks.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't think the balloon lost any mass beacuse there was no air escaped but the molecules slowed down when the balloon hit the cold air.So the molecules sort of crunched together and the balloon shrunk.

    ReplyDelete
  59. All compound have many different atoms that vibrate. as u increase the temperature of the compound the atoms get more and more excited and therefore vibrate and move more vigerously. this allows them to move further apart and therefore fill a larger area. on the other hand if u cool a compound down the particles becomr less excited and take up a smaller area. the cold balloon is a perfect example of this. Helium gas is lighter than air. The balloons when filled with Helium or hydrogen gas, tend to deflate quickly than normal air balloons because the air pressure outside of the balloon makes the helium balloons deflate quicker. You must also have noticed that the mouth blown balloons remain as they were as long as you don't deflate them yourself, or they get a hole in them so yes the balloon did lose mass.

  60. I think the balloon lost mass because the cold air in the freezer made the balloon shrink to a smaller size. The air in the balloon was more then likeley room temperature and when you left it in the freezer it lost some of its mass.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I believe the balloon lost no air, just the mass changed. I remember in Hands on Science, fourth or fifth grade, we learned how when air heats up the molecules move around faster and they become more excited.
But when the temperature drops down, the molecules slow down. I think when the molecules slowed down, the mass went down. So, the balloon shrunk.

  62. The balloons mass changed because the molecules woul slow down because of the tempature. It's so cold, the molecules pack together. Packed molecules are sqweezed together.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The mass inside the balloon did not change! When you froze the balloon the molecules got packed together tightly just like you said about the girls at recess when the hug when it is cold. Here is an example: when byou freeze water the molecules get tightly packed together. However the balloon shrunk becuase the molecules got packed together and the balloon shrank.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i think the cold air shrunk because the air particles stopped moving so much so the cold air de-expanded.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think the balloon got smaller because the molecules got packed up together, but the air inside the balloon did not escape from the balloon. I think the mass is still the same because the molecules are just packed together. For example like when you freeze a liquid. I got my answers from ask.com

    ReplyDelete
  66. i did some research and found out that the mass will stay the same because even when the balloon got smaller it was just because the molecules packed together when it was in the freezer and I remember what Mrs. Charles said that molecules are just like girls when they are cold they pack together to get warmer also when I researched it it also said that inside the balloon there will be drops of frozen liquid

    ReplyDelete
  67. The mass will not change, because no Air escaped. The Molecules only pack closer together and it shrinks.

  68. The mass doesn't change and volume is changed because air doesn't go away and volume is proportional to temprature.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The balloon lost mass because the air condensed,so the volume was reduced when it was cooler.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I belive that no mass was lost, b/c no air was lost, thus there really is no possible way for the balloon to have lost mass! The tempature in the freezer is cooler than that of the balloon and since the temp. makes in colder in the balloon, the molecules move much closer together. We learned @ the beginning of the year that the colder it is, the closer the molecules are packed together and the hotter it is, the FARTHER the molecules move away from each other.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think that the cold freezer made the ballon shrink becuas the freeze froze the air

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think the hot air made the air in the ballon become how then expand, then the cold air pushed down and pulled the ballon since the other cold air outside of the ballon is pushing down too! then the ballon stayed shrunken.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think that the freezer made the balloon shrink because the air in thecold room is more likely more dense and the air from the balloon is more dense so that makes the balloon shrink.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The mass stays the same and the molecules get closer together, that is why it shrunk.

    ReplyDelete
  75. i think in the warm room it expanded because of the molecules and when the balloon was cold the molecules got closer together

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think the balloon did not loose any mass. It got cold and the molecules scrunched together and shrunk. Hot air expands and cold gets clumped together!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think that when it got warm the molecules moved faster and the balloon expanded but when it got cold they moved slower and the balloon got all shriveled up.

    ReplyDelete
  78. the ballon did not loose any air its molecules in side it slowed down and got more compacted together

    ReplyDelete
  79. Because no air escaped from the balloon, the mass did not change either. This is because if an area gets colder, the air molecules inside the balloon got all tight and close to each other, so the balloon shrunk. This whole process works sort of like girls in cold or warm days : )

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree with you guys that the the balloon didn't loose any air because it said that the balloon did not loose any air it just shrunk and the molecules got squished together in the freezer.

    ReplyDelete
  81. The balloons molecules got squished together because in the freezer the coldness packed the molecules together and the balloon shrunk.

    ReplyDelete
  82. The mass does not change because air does not escape but the molecules in the balloon slow down due to colder weather which makes it shrink. I figured this out by researching it on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The ballown did not lose mass because when mocles get coldeer the slow down and the get tirghter together.(mine):) :) :) :) :) :)!

It will shrink & will have drops of frozen liquid inside . With the removal of hot air,the ballon becomes denser so it occupies less space...
But the balloon would decrease in size due to the fact that the gas particles in the air are getting colder and therefore increasing in density but decreasing in size. The opposite effect of hot air expanding and rising.(ansers.com)

    ReplyDelete
  84. The balloon does not loose mass because in a hot climit the molecules speed up and expand and in a cold climit the molecules slow down and pack closer in together to make the balloon smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I saw on a site that the balloon shrunk because the gas molecules compacted shrunk the balloon

    ReplyDelete
  86. The balloon got smaller because when the balloon/air is hot the molecules speed it just like girls on a warm day and when the balloon/air is cold the molecules move really slow like girls on a cold day so the faster molecules take up more room to make the balloon bigger and the slower molecules take up less room to make the balloon smaller that is why the balloon changed its size but didn't loose any air

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't think the balloon lost any mass because when Mrs. Charles put the balloon in the warm room the molecules spread out and moved fast just like the girls on the playground. But when Mrs. Charles put the balloon in the freezer the molecules started to huddle together and started slowing down just like the girls on a cold day. So, I don't think the balloon lost mass the molecules just huddled together to make the balloon shrink.
